OT OT: GE Closes its Last Incandescent Lamp Factory.......

I agree - it's not using energy that's the problem, it's wasting it. Incandescent bulbs- as much as I love them - are very wasteful. That wouldn't even be a big problem if the general population wasn't careless and wasteful.

But ride around your town at night. How much wasted lighting power do you see? Megawatts, I'm sure. All sorts of things lit up that simple don't need to be. That's what burns me. All the blah, blah, blah about saving energy and no restrictions on blatant wasting power.

My own CFL and power waste confession. There is a little lamp post in front of our house with a CFL in it. It burns 24/7 - and has for many years. Is it needed? No. But because it's low wattage I've never bothered to turn it off or put a photocell on it.

You can buy them for a few bucks. Not sure what you saw, but I have all CFL and they are great.

If you want incandescent, buy a decent brand, Energy Star rated 2700K. They are reddish-orangish to simulate.

I like a bright white light for work, I prefer 5000K or even 6500K

Here are GE 2700K at Sprawlmart, 10 bucks a 6 pack.

Just stay away from Dollar store and drug store crap. If you bought a Yugo, you can't make judgments about the quality of a Mercedes. Or a Chevy.

The above GE bulbs being Chevy, Ushio bulbs being Mercedes. The Ushio, I get a free bulb if it fails within 3 years. So far I haven't collected.

Looks like most of the guilty are in Eastern US and Europe.

Europe has caught up, ten years ago about half that much light.

The one positive thing about high efficiency bulbs...if stoopids leave them on, they are only wasting a quarter of the power...

I'm guilty quite often.

The hardest thing is Summer air conditioning. That's why I'm suggesting a lot of industrial be moved to off peak. Organizational solutions are important too.

Forgetting to turn off a light in the house doesn't burn much power. Business and municiple burn up a ton more. I would love to see street lights turned off at mid-night, same for business signs/lights after hours. There may be some security issues to address here an there, but I think the savings would be tremendous. I think it's rediculous to keep town lit up all night long.

We don't need population control. The only reason the west isn't shrinking is becasue of massive immigration, legal and non-legal. I'll leave the draconian population control to the Chinese.

And BTW, population control is NOT draconian.
Certain methods of population control are draconian.
The Chinese were foolish to think the state could mandate such a thing.
And this is ridiculous because anyone with half a brain knows it.
And no, we are not helpless against there being a trillion people
on this planet stuffed in every orifice of Mother Earth.

Steve, I'm with you on a lot of your points but as OG says, you can't comment on the light warmth anymore. Personally I can't really tell the difference. We have CFL's on the duty lights and incandescent for the short term, on and off lights. And yes, OG you can get the nice coloured ones at the dollar store. At least in my neck of the woods anyway. I just hate having to take them to a special place to dispose of them. In my neck of the woods that's not your local hardware store, it a 20 minute drive in a place I don't find myself very often so I have to store them to make the trip worthwhile. Storing dead bulbs for 6 months seems a little silly to me.
